One email with a crafted attachment, and Cisco's mail gateway hands over root.

What happened

Cisco patched CVE-2026-76519 in Secure Email Gateway on 14 October 2026 after active exploitation: a remote, unauthenticated attacker sends an email with a crafted attachment and gets root. It hits gateways with File Reputation on and Content Scanner Tools older than 25.3.0.5525. Shadowserver tracks nearly 300 exposed instances, per BleepingComputer.

Why it matters

Your mail gateway opens every attachment before your staff does. A flaw in that step means the attack arrives as an ordinary email, and root on the box lets attackers read the mail that passes through.

What to do

If you run Cisco Secure Email Gateway, update Content Scanner Tools to 25.3.0.5525 or later today. Check the version with the contentscannerstatus command, review firewall logs, and renew credentials on any box you doubt.

Attackers don't need to break into the mail gateway. They email it. And it opens the attachment for them.
