GitHub's stacked pull requests are now GA. Approvals survive the rebase.

What happened

On Tuesday 6 October 2026, GitHub made stacked pull requests generally available on all github.com plans. Rebase stack now keeps approvals on unchanged code and signs replacement commits, and a stack lands through the merge queue as one merge group. GitHub says repositories using stacks saw 9% more merged code than peers.

Why it matters

Picture the giant pull request nobody wants to review, open for a week. Stacks cut it into small reviews that merge together, and main moving ahead no longer wipes the approvals you already earned.

What to do

Pick your next large change and split it into a stack of small pull requests. If you run GitHub Enterprise Server, wait: GitHub says support comes in an upcoming release.

Big pull requests don't get reviewed. They get approved. Stacks are how you get real review back.
